Review – Class Act by Dorian Quillen
With all the doom and gloom of the economy, the tragedies that seem to go on forever in the news, what we all need right now is some outstanding, beautiful, encouraging stories of triumph during challenging times. Class Act fills that bill nicely! You can read an excerpt of the book here. You’ll want to read more after reading it, I did! Be prepared with tissues and a loved one near by for hugs, you’ll need them!
Written by a counselor in Oklahoma, she retells stories of “Eight Young People Who Turned Tragedy into Triumph”. These are amazing young people who have been through so much in their lives and have continued on to make something better of themselves dispite the challenges they faced. These aren’t extra-ordinary young people, they are just like your own kids, who hopefully will never have to go through what these kids did.
Full of inspiration, courage, strength above and beyond measure, this book makes you want to cry and cheer for these kids all at the same time! As a homeschooling mom, I’m going to have my two sons read this book for school. It shows them that no matter what, you can keep going and you can deal with the things that life throws at you, as long as you have faith. I think this will deifnitely be a great book for my sons to read, because I know that my boys would be able to go through the things these kids have, even if they don’t know it.
One story totally broke me down though. I’ve always been afraid of tornadoes, being a southern California girl, that was never a problem. In the second story in the book, Dorian Quillen tells about a little boy who’s mother is taken from him by a giant tornado. His mother gave her life to protect him from the winds. Of course I was in tears as I read through his story, thinking of my own young son who just turned 13. I know I would do anything to keep him and his brother safe. So that story hit close to home… it was beautiful and sad.
I highly recommend going out and getting this wonderful book of hope and encouragement. Share it with the teens in your life as well!
