How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World by Jordan Christy
About The Book:
In a society driven by celebutante news and myspace profiles, women of class, style and charm are hard to come by. The Audrey and Katharines of the world continue to lose their lustre as thongs, rehab and outrageous behaviour burn up the daily headlines. But, despite appearances, guys still want a girl they can take home to their mother, employers still like to see a tailored suit and peers still respect classy conduct. So is it possible to maintain old fashioned virtues in a modern world without looking like a starchy Amish grandma? Christy shows women how in this guide to glamorous style, professional success and true love...the classy way. Full of fun assignments, notable names and real-life examples, Christy offers a new look at seemingly 'old fashioned' advice. She covers diet, speech, work ethic, friends, relationships, manners, makeup and fashionable yet modest clothing, showing modern ladies how they can be beautiful, intelligent and fun while retaining values and morals
My Opinion:
I was raised by a single mom who had the style and class of the 50's. She raised me to be a lady. I was taught how to walk in heals as soon as I started playing in them. I was taught how to cross my legs demurely. I was taught how to eat my food properly AND even how to eat it seductively. My mom was a "Hepburn" and she raised me to be one as well. That being said, even though I was a teen in the 80's and a Twenty something in the 90's, this book spoke to me. Madonnna was all the rage when I was a teen, with her unwashed hair and clothes that looked like she just rolled out of bed. So I understand how difficult it is to be a "Lady" in a society that is revering someone who is all BUT a Lady!
Jordan Christy did an amazing job of conveying how to continue to be a Hepburn while the female icons of society get raunchier and more resque. She talks about the pit-falls of being too free with your sexuality and how it can be a detriment to your reputation. In her chapter "Words, Words, Words" Christy talks about how we are judged by our words and how to choose them wisely. Christy also talks about the importance of choosing your friends wisely, working hard, and so much more.
All these ideas are ones that used to be taught to young women on a daily basis, but somehow were lost in between my mom's generation and mine. I know most of my friends were not taught the same things I was about ettiguette and style (not as in fashion, but attitude). But my mom was older than most of my friends moms, so that may account for some of the difference. In How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton world, Christy lays out all the lessons I learned, clearly and cleverly for any young woman. I would highly recommend this book to any mom who has a daughter in this day and age. If I had a daughter (I have two boys, who I am trying to teach in the same way), I would certainly be giving her this book and using it to help me to raise her the way I was raised.
