Sky Girl and the Superheroic Legacy by Joe Sergi

Back of the Book:

Imagine living up to a legacy that no one can remember. Sky Girl and the Superheroic Legacy tells the story of DeDe Christopher, an ordinary teenager with an extraordinary destiny. DeDe is an average high school sophomore with dreams of winning the National Gymnastic Tournament and dating the school quarterback. But her world changes when she begins to develop fantastic abilities that are strangely similar to those of a fictional comic book super hero named SkyBoy. With the help of her best friend, Jason, a self-proclaimed comic geek, DeDe begins a quest to discover her true destiny as she confronts the all-too-real enemies and allies of SkyBoy. She must deal with capes, apes and aliens to find a way to live up to a legacy that no one can remember and become Sky Girl.

My Opinion:

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book when I first received it from Pump Up Your Book!  I’m not really very fond of comic books, although I do love comic book style movies.   Still I’ve never really read any of the Marvel or DC Comics, even as a kid.  My boys have read a few, but even they aren’t really all that in to them.  Once I started reading Sky Girl, my opinion changed dramatically!

This isn’t just another comic book super hero style story, this is a great coming of age story as well.  It’s also really great that the Super Hero is a girl!  She’s smart, cute (although she doesn’t think so), strong, courageous… just about everything that you want in a strong female character.  I just absolutely loved her!

The entire story is really cute, not overly complicated, but it was very well written and fun to read through.  I could guess where the story was going, and none of the twists were really surprising, but even that didn’t deter from the over all fun quality of the story itself.  It was definitely a very enjoyable read!

I would recommend this book to any comic book lover for sure.  I would also recommend this book to just about any young girl, especially between the ages of 11 -17.  There’s nothing overly mature in the story or the characters, so there’s very little to worry about in Parental Guidance.  So maybe even a younger reader with higher vocabulary comprehension would enjoy this book as well.   I don’t know if boys would like this book, it’s got enough action and adventure, but the main character is a girl, so some boys may not like it simply for that reason.  But there is a really great male sidekick, Jason.  He may appeal to the boys enough to keep them reading the book.
